Packaging 50g portions of puffed snacks such as popcorn, potato chips, banana chips and pork rinds is not the same as packaging rice or other dense granules. Puffed snacks are light, bulky and fragile. A small vertical packaging machine may look suitable on paper, but it often fails in practice because of limited bag size, a narrow forming channel and undersized weighing buckets. This guide explains what to check before choosing a medium or large vertical snack packaging machine, and why wide bags, gentle feeding, nitrogen flushing and metallized film matter.
1. Why Small Machines Often Fail for 50g Puffed Snacks
Many small chips packaging machines and mini vertical packaging machines are rated for a 1–100g weighing range. However, those ratings are usually based on dense materials such as rice, which pack tightly and leave little internal bag space. Puffed snacks behave differently. Popcorn, potato chips, banana chips, pork rinds, shrimp strips and corn snacks are ultra-light, bulky and irregular. Even a 50g portion needs more bag volume, a wider forming channel and larger weighing buckets. Using undersized equipment can lead to incomplete seals, material trapped in the seal area and bag rupture during transport.
2. Structural Limits of Small Vertical Packaging Machines
2.1 Limited Bag Size Range
A conventional small vertical packaging machine has a fixed sealing structure. Its maximum bag width is often around 10 cm and its maximum bag length around 15 cm. That size can handle dense granules, but it is not suitable for fluffy puffed products.
2.2 Narrow Forming Channel
The forming channel determines how much space the product has inside the bag. The channel diameter generally follows the formula: (film width – 2) / π. Small machines use a narrow fixed channel, which cannot accommodate large or irregular snacks. As a practical guideline, popcorn and common puffed snacks typically need a minimum bag width of about 13 cm, while harder and larger snacks such as potato chips and pork rinds may need about 18 cm. These figures should be confirmed with actual product testing.
2.3 Limited Feeding Channel and Weighing Bucket Volume
Medium and large weighing packaging machines have larger feeding channels and weighing cavities. Small packaging machines often have narrower vibration channels, which can cause puffed snacks to block and prevent the machine from working normally. A larger weighing cavity is also necessary to reach the target weight, such as 50g. With our standard snack packaging machines, the weight deviation is typically equivalent to 2–4 pieces of the individual product. With a combination weigher, the deviation can be controlled within ±1–1.5g. However, the packaging machine itself does not reduce the breakage rate; breakage control depends on the feeding method and other related configurations.
3. Why Nitrogen Flushing Matters for Puffed Snack Packaging
High-quality puffed food packaging often uses nitrogen flushing. Nitrogen is not a chemical preservative, but it can significantly reduce the oxygen and water vapor content inside the bag. Fried and puffed snacks contain oils that can oxidize and hydrolyze when exposed to air, leading to rancidity, softening and a shorter shelf life. Filling the bag with dry nitrogen displaces air, helps protect the crisp texture and extends storage time. A nitrogen filling packaging machine can support precise quantitative nitrogen injection and is a common configuration for premium snack packaging.
4. Metallized Film for Nitrogen-Flushed Packaging
4.1 Barrier Performance
Many customers confuse metallized film with pure aluminum foil. In standard industrial tests (23°C, 0% RH for oxygen; 38°C, 90% RH for water vapor), high-quality VMPET metallized film typically shows :
oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of 1.0–3.0 cc/(m²·24h·atm);
water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 0.5–1.5 g/(m²·24h·atm).
These values can vary by supplier and structure.
4.2 Nitrogen Pressure Difference
Film permeability is fixed, but nitrogen flushing changes the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the bag. Without nitrogen, the oxygen concentration inside and outside the bag is more balanced. After nitrogen flushing, the internal oxygen concentration drops close to 0%, creating a stronger driving force for external oxygen to permeate inward. This places higher demands on the film’s barrier performance.
4.3 Why Not Pure Aluminum Foil
Pure aluminum foil has near-zero permeability, but it has practical drawbacks. It can crease and squeeze during logistics and stacking. Once wrinkled, the aluminum layer may crack and lose barrier performance. Pure aluminum foil is also more expensive and less cost-effective for mass production. For many nitrogen-flushed snack applications, metallized film offers a better balance of barrier, flexibility and cost.
5. One-Stop Puffed Food Packaging Solutions
Tianze Machinery provides customized packaging solutions for puffed snacks, covering machines, roll film and nitrogen equipment. The right configuration depends on your production scale, product type and budget. Below are three common options.
5.1 Single-Head Electric Large Vertical Packaging Machine — for Small Businesses
Best for: small workshops, startup snack brands and low-to-medium daily output.
This machine uses a single-head electric weighing system and a large vertical structure. It is suitable for 50g puffed snacks when the bag size and weighing cavity are matched to the product. It is a practical entry-level option for small businesses that need stable packaging without a full automatic line.
Core configuration:
-
Single-head electric weighing
-
Large vertical structure
-
Suitable for small workshops and pilot production
5.2 Multi-Head Pneumatic Large Vertical Packaging Machine — for Medium and Large Factories
Best for: medium and large snack factories with higher output and stricter weighing stability requirements.
The dual-head pneumatic system improves weighing speed and stability. Combined with a larger forming channel and weighing cavity, it is suitable for bulky and fragile puffed snacks such as potato chips, popcorn, banana chips and pork rinds.
Core configuration:
-
Dual-head pneumatic weighing
-
Larger forming channel and weighing cavity
-
Designed for medium and large production

6. FAQ
Q1: Can small vertical machines pack 50g popcorn and potato chips?
A1: Generally, no. Small chips packaging machines have limited bag size, forming channel and weighing bucket volume. They are better suited to high-density materials. Bulky puffed snacks usually require medium or large customized packaging equipment.
Q2: Why do puffed snack bags need nitrogen flushing?
A2: Nitrogen displaces oxygen and helps reduce water vapor inside the bag. This can slow oil oxidation and snack softening, helping extend the shelf life of fried and puffed foods. It is a common configuration for automatic snack packaging machines.
Q3: Is pure aluminum foil better than metallized film?
A3: Not necessarily. Pure aluminum foil is fragile and expensive. Metallized film offers a practical balance of barrier performance, flexibility and cost, making it a suitable roll film for many nitrogen-flushed puffed food applications.
Q4: What snacks need a customized vibration feeding structure?
A4: Large and fragile snacks such as potato chips, pork rinds and thick banana chips can benefit from vibration feeding to reduce breakage and improve packaging stability.
